Investigation Reveals Arctic Bear DNA Changes Could Help Adjustment to Rising Temperatures

Scientists have identified alterations in polar bear DNA that might enable the creatures adapt to increasingly warm environments. This investigation is believed to be the first instance where a meaningful connection has been identified between increasing heat and shifting DNA in a wild animal species.

Environmental Crisis Threatens Arctic Bear Future

Environmental degradation is jeopardizing the survival of Arctic bears. Forecasts suggest that two-thirds of them could be lost by 2050 as their snowy environment retreats and the weather becomes more extreme.

“The genome is the guidebook within every cell, directing how an life form develops and functions,” stated the lead researcher, Dr. Alice Godden. “By comparing these bears’ active genes to regional climate data, we found that increasing temperatures seem to be driving a dramatic surge in the behavior of mobile genetic elements within the specific area bears’ DNA.”

DNA Study Shows Key Changes

The team studied blood samples taken from Arctic bears in two regions of Greenland and contrasted “mobile genetic elements”: tiny, movable segments of the DNA sequence that can affect how various genes function. The analysis examined these genetic markers in relation to climate conditions and the corresponding changes in gene expression.

As local climates and food sources change due to transformations in habitat and food supply forced by global heating, the DNA of the animals appear to be adapting. The population of polar bears in the warmest part of the country showed greater changes than the populations farther north.

Possible Evolutionary Response

“This result is important because it shows, for the initial occasion, that a distinct group of polar bears in the hottest part of Greenland are employing ‘mobile genetic elements’ to quickly modify their own DNA, which might be a critical adaptive strategy against melting sea ice,” noted Godden.

The climate in the colder region are more frigid and less variable, while in the south-east there is a significantly hotter and less icy habitat, with steep climate variability.

DNA sequences in animals evolve over time, but this process can be hastened by environmental stress such as a rapidly heating environment.

Nutritional Changes and Active DNA Areas

Scientists observed some notable DNA alterations, such as in sections associated to fat processing, that might assist polar bears persist when resources are limited. Animals in warmer regions had increased rough, plant-based diets in contrast to the lipid-rich, marine diets of northern bears, and the DNA of south-eastern bears seemed to be evolving to this new reality.

Godden explained further: “Scientists found several genetic hotspots where these jumping genes were highly active, with some located in the functional gene sections of the DNA, implying that the bears are subject to rapid, profound evolutionary shifts as they respond to their disappearing sea ice habitat.”

Next Steps and Conservation Implications

The subsequent phase will be to look at additional Arctic bear groups, of which there are twenty around the world, to see if comparable modifications are occurring to their DNA.

This research could help safeguard the animals from disappearance. However, the experts noted that it was essential to halt temperature rises from accelerating by lowering the consumption of carbon-based fuels.

“We cannot be complacent, this offers some optimism but does not mean that polar bears are at any diminished threat of extinction. We still need to be doing every action we can to decrease global carbon emissions and mitigate temperature increases,” concluded Godden.
